One of the best ways to reduce your ecological footprint is to shop at a zero waste store. What does it mean to shop zero waste? In this article, we will learn how to make your next grocery trip a more sustainable one!

What is a Zero Waste Store

The concept behind the zero waste store is to sell and consume goods more responsibly.

This sustainable business model has three goals:

  1. Cut out single use plastics

  2. Reduce every day waste

  3. Facilitate the switch to more sustainable alternatives

Why Shop at a Zero Waste Store?

There are many benefits to shopping at a zero waste store.

First, you can buy in bulk. This not only eliminates unnecessary packaging but can help you save money.

Second, you help reduce C02 emissions. Many supermarkets import goods from overseas. This is harmful to the environment. Zero waste stores, on the other hand, support local farmers. They also shop from suppliers who share their sustainable values.

Third, you show more love to Planet Earth. Zero waste stores sell products that are made to last. They are made from high-quality and/or sustainable materials such as stainless steel and bamboo. When an item can no longer be used, it can be recycled. Better yet, add it to your compost.

How To Find a Zero Waste Store

To find a zero waste store, open the browser of your favourite search engine. Type “zero waste store near me” or “zero waste shop”.

Many places have brick-and-mortar stores to choose from. If there is no zero waste store where you live, you may be able to shop at an online one.

If this isn't available, try shopping at small grocery stores. These are often family-run. They also tend to be supportive towards conscious consumers.

Alternatively, shop at the grocery store that is closest to you. Walking or cycling to the shops is eco-friendly and makes for great exercise!

What To Bring To a Zero Waste Store

On your next shopping trip, bring whatever bags you already have. These can even be the plastic bags from your last trip. After all, waste is only waste if you throw it away!

Popular storage items are:

  • Mesh produce bags for fruits and vegetables

  • Re-purposed jars for carrying liquids

  • Paper bags for loose goods

How To Tare Your Goods

When weighing your bulk goods, you will need to tare. To do so, simply place an empty jar on the scale. Then, write the weight of the jar somewhere visible on the jar. Finally, fill your jar with goods.

When you arrive at the check out counter, the cashier will deduct the weight of the jar from the total volume. You only pay for what you've filled in.

Don't hesitate to ask the staff or volunteers at your zero waste store for help. They'll be happy to show you around, help you find products, and give you a pleasant shopping experience.
